About Us

Generosity that Strengthens

We strengthen ministries that care for the whole person—body, mind, and soul—so that communities can thrive in Christ’s name. Our approach is relational and prayerful, grounded in trust, humility, and generosity. We believe in amplifying what’s already working, without overshadowing the leaders faithfully serving on the front lines.

Our name comes from the unseen power of protein: a humble yet essential element that fuels health, growth, and resilience. We aim to do the same in ministry—quietly, consistently, and with purpose.

Our Mission

To glorify God by following Him as He leads us in the acquisition, operation, and disposition of businesses for the purpose of providing funds to ministries which feed people spiritually with a special emphasis on those that also feed physically and by teaching the word of God as witnesses for Jesus Christ.

Matthew Owen, Executive Director

Matthew has served as the Managing Director of The Protein Foundation since 2012. Before joining the Foundation, he pastored churches in Vermont, The Philippines, and Seattle, WA. He lives with his family in Yarmouth, Maine. Matt’s desire is to build collegial, working relationships with ministries, ensuring every grant supports both spiritual formation and tangible impact. He often jokes that he has the dream job—and he means it.

Our Story

The Protein Foundation began in 1983 when a group of Christian business leaders in Connecticut felt called to serve the Kingdom in a unique way—by funding ministries through business ownership. Rather than soliciting donations, they operated privately held businesses and directed their profits toward supporting ministries that met both physical and spiritual needs.

Since then, we’ve partnered with Gospel-centered ministries across the U.S. and abroad, with a focus today on northern New England and Bridgeport, CT. At our core, we are stewards—following the Holy Spirit’s lead as we invest in ministries marked by faith, humility, and impact.

The Protein Foundation exists through the faithful generosity of House of Flavors, a business stewarded for God’s purposes. Together, we pursue a shared calling—House of Flavors generates the resources, and the Foundation directs those funds to Gospel-centered ministries serving both body and soul.

Let’s Start a Conversation.

We believe trust is built through relationships. If you’re learning about the Protein Foundation for the first time, we hope this gives you a sense of who we are and how we walk alongside others. If you’re exploring a possible partnership, we’d be glad to connect.
